DUCHESNE CHOIR
This choir is open to all freshmen through seniors, no audition is required. Students will work on choral vocal techniques and learn repertoire of various styles from different periods of music. Other training includes music history, sight-singing and ear training, vocal technique, solo repertoire work and small group ensemble. This is a year long course. Students in choir are expected to perform for school and community concerts, and district and state competitions.
INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE
This ensemble is open to all students (9th-12th Grades). Previous experience on an instrument is required. Students will work on instrumental repertoire of various styles from different periods of music. Other training includes music history, ear training, music theory and solo repertoire work. This is year long course. Students in the ensemble are expected to perform for school and community concerts, district and state competitions.
ART I
Art I provides for individual research based upon seeing, investigating artists' ideas, and working with materials. Content and projects are varied and are intended to shift students to a particular way of seeing. Studio experiences will sensitize students to art media and tools, and to shape, line, space, hue, value, chroma, texture and their organization in space.
TWO DIMENSIONAL ART (Prerequisite: Art I)
Students will explore the elements and principles of art and their function in two-dimensional design. Studio work will provide students the opportunity to apply these fundamentals in a creative process to promote experimentation, problem solving and self-expression. Media may include work in - drawing, painting, and print-making. This class may be taken numerous times to develop skills and techniques in art.
THREE DIMENSIONAL ART (Prerequisite: Art I)
Students will explore the elements and principles of art: and their function in three-dimensional design. Studio work will provide students the opportunity to apply these fundamentals in a creative process to promote experimentation, problem solving and self-expression. Media may include, but not be limited to – clay, casting, relief work, sculpture in the round. This class may be taken numerous times to develop skills and techniques in art.
PHOTOGRAPHY I
(Prerequisite: Art I) Students will explore the elements and principles of art and their function in photography. The students will investigate camera elements, techniques, black and white printing processes, photographic expression, and conceptual aesthetics. Group critiques complement darkroom and field work. Students must have access to a 35mm, manual camera and will provide their own film and photography paper.
PHOTOGRAPHY II
(Prerequisite: Photography I) Exploration of photographic expression: advanced darkroom techniques, graphic film, non-silver processes. The students will create with subtraction from or addition to a continuous tone negative, resulting in a working art print. Students must have access to a 35 mm, manual camera and will provide their own photography paper.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING
(Prerequisite: Art I) Students will explore the elements and principles of art and their function in digital imaging as applied to photography. Through demonstrations and hands on projects students will learn the basics of digital image manipulation using computer software. The student will have the opportunity to learn how to operate the software using scanning equipment, software tools and output devices. Students much possess basic computer skills and a 3 mega pixel (minimum) digital camera.
INTERIOR DESIGN
(Prerequisite: Art I) This course enables students to explore their creativity and to develop skills in applying the elements and principles of design to interiors. Projects are integrated throughout as the students study architecture, design, furniture styles, surface treatments, backgrounds, functions of space and lighting. Interior design software and various field trips to view professionally designed interior spaces will be utilized.
COMPETITIVE FORENSICS
This course focuses on the individual event categories of area speech contests. Students will develop contest pieces in four or more of the following categories throughout the year: oral interpretation of dramatic literature, oral interpretation of poetry, humorous interpretation of prose literature, original oratory, informative speaking, persuasive speaking, extemporaneous speaking, speaking to entertain, and impromptu speaking. Students will also be involved in either duet acting (two students) or oral interpretation of drama (three or more students). Students will compete in at least five speech contests through the course of a semester.
ACTING AND PLAY PRODUCTION
This course will focus on the vocal, physical and intellectual demands required of the actor by contemporary and classical texts. The honing of the actor’s vocal, physical and intellectual tools will take place through exercises, improvisations and staged performances. In the second quarter, students will explore the elements of scene design by working on the stage and creating their own 3-dimensional models.
DUCHESNE DANCE ENSEMBLE/LITURGICAL DANCE
(Prerequisite Dance or teacher’s approval)
This is a performance class. Students practice and study a variety of dance styles. Dancers continue developing respect for their bodies and their ability to communicate through movement. Students learn different methods of creating and have an opportunity to choreograph a complete dance that will be performed before an audience. Students develop stage presence and learn about the cost and work that goes into putting on productions. Ensemble members may also elect to participate in school masses.
ADVANCED DANCE (Prerequisite teacher’s approval)
This is an intermediate/advanced class briefly reviewing the elements of dance movement (space, energy and time) and dance skills. It includes jazz, modern, ballet and some ethnic dance exercises that will increase body control, alignment, flexibility, balance, coordination and technique. Students study choreographic forms. Dance composition is emphasized thus preparing the student for DANCE ENSEMBLE/LITURGICAL DANCE.
STRING ENSEMBLE
This course will offer accomplished musicians a venue to practice and perform with other Duchesne students. Members will be offered performance opportunities and music contests. Class will meet two times a week. |
