Summer Construction Update

Campus upgrades are part of Duchesne's A Bold Step Forward campaign

We are happy to announce that our restroom remodel project is nearly complete. Workers are installing the final fixtures this week so they will be ready for the start of classes August 11. The renovated spaces
are bright and modern yet honor the aesthetic of our historic campus. 

The process to transform our auditorium and backstage area into a state-of-the-art theater is underway. This area is closed to students, faculty/staff, and visitors during construction. Before work began, Mr. and Mrs. Becker removed and stored many of the steps, beams, tables and other items where past cast and crew members had written their names. We will find a proper place to display these pieces after the theater opens. 

Workers are ready to begin the careful process of restoring and preserving our chapel. This work was originally scheduled to start in July, however, we asked our partners at MCL Construction to push the start date until August 12 so that we may gather for convocation as a community in the Chapel before it is closed. 

MCL Construction completed our Performing Arts Center addition in 2013 and knows our building and community well. Project managers maintain a schedule that prevents work from interfering with learning time.

2022-23 School Year Theme

In late June, a group of Duchesne educators gathered to discuss our theme for the year. In response to many of the issues facing our young women, we hope to encourage each member of our community to recognize the special gifts given to her by God and to know that her place in this community and our larger world needs those gifts to be developed and shared.

This theme is deeply rooted in the spirituality of Mother Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ. Each of us as a child of the Sacred Heart is called to live our vocation at Duchesne making known the love of the Heart of Jesus and helping each other grow in knowing this divine love and seeing God at work in our community.

 

Our Lunch Program has New Menu Options

We welcome two new chefs to Duchesne as we work to increase our lunch offerings. 

Students and staff can expect to see a variety of new menu items this year including pasta and meatball red sauce, chicken enchiladas, a taco bar with ground beef, chicken caesar wraps, and more! The salad bar will be available, too. These are the biggest updates to the Duchesne lunch program in many years. 

The addition of animal proteins to the lunch menu and current food prices have required a change in lunch pricing. A hot lunch or salad bar option will be $7.00.

The punch card option will be available through the website or by purchase in the lunch line as in previous years. Beginning the second week of school, students will be asked to order lunch for the coming week. This will be done using a web-based survey that will be sent by email to all students and staff. No names will be required and if a student forgets or changes their mind there is no penalty and there will likely be enough lunch prepared. Getting a count ahead of time will help our chefs to order a precise amount of ingredients and prepare meals with more accuracy. Students will learn more about this process at the first all-school homeroom. 

Meet our new chefs:

Joel Wallace is a classically trained chef who attend Western Culinary Institute in Portland, OR. He has been working in restaurants since 2003. He started out as a busser and expo and worked through the ranks to become the corporate chef of the largest full-service hospitality company in South Dakota. He and his wife relocated to Omaha last fall. Last Wednesday, they welcomed their first child, Connor, into the world. Joel is excited to be part of the Duchesne team and can’t wait to start cooking for all the students. 

Tyree Todd joins the Duchesne community and brings his passion for cooking with him. What began as a hobby has become a calling and a career! When he is away from the kitchen Mr. Todd enjoys spending time with his six year old son Dashiel. He also loves being in nature, taking hikes, and exercising. He is also a film buff. Mr. Todd is excited to be a part of our community and to bring us fabulous lunches. Welcome Mr. Todd!

Class News

A'23: It is your turn to lead! 

Senior orientation will be Wednesday, August 10

We will gather in the Fitz and there will be donuts! We have a full day of activities and information to share with you: we will discus leadership, senior privileges and permissions, eat lunch, take a class photo, and spend an afternoon session with Mrs. Swanson. You will finish at 2:00 p.m. Please come in uniform and bring your iPad.

A'23: Senior Year Apple Warranty

In the 22-23 school year, our seniors AppleCare warranty will end. When purchased in 2019, Apple offered only 3 years of warranty (so, this is only true for our rising seniors). Insurance will be provided to replace her iPad on the following estimations and plans:

  • Single time replacement. Any additional repairs or replacements will be covered with a new AppleCare policy, but will also incur a $50 copay
  • This insurance covers only the iPad and will replace the tablet with the cheapest version available that will meet our classroom specifications
  • As with AppleCare, there will be a $50 copay for replacement units.
  • As with AppleCare, this insurance does NOT cover lost equipment

A'26: Orientation is Tuesday, August 9

Students, please enter the building through the Performing Arts Center entrance beginning at 8:15 a.m. There will be donuts! Orientation will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the Fitz. Student council members and class officers will guide everyone to the correct location. There will be important introductions before students meet their advisor and advisory members. Students will follow their Monday class schedule with a 10-minute stop to meet each teacher.

We will take a class photo, enjoy lunch together, and then set up their lockers, enjoy an afternoon gouter, and paint their hand print in the hideout! Orientation ends at 3:30 p.m. and students can be picked up in the student lot.  

A'26 please come in uniform and bring your iPads! We can’t wait to see you! 

 

Campus Ministry

With the new year comes some exciting news: now all of the theology department will be directly involved in Campus Ministry! Mr. Mullaney and Mrs. McConnel have joined the team, along with our Mrs. Katie Grudle who is returning to Duchesne this year. We believe these new additions will maintain and grow our commitment to Goal 1 at Duchesne.
  • Below are some of big Campus Ministry dates you’ll want to have on your calendar:
    • Class Retreats: Freshman: 9/18; Sophomore: 8/29; Junior: 10/3; Senior: 4/20.
    • Optional Retreats: Puiez (Silent) on 3/18, Parent/Daughter on 2/12, MSB Footsteps (NEW!) day TBD
    • Weekly Morning Offerings (on a “normal schedule): M-Adoration, W-Wonder Wednesdays, Th-Sodality/Rosary
    • Ablaze Eucharistic Revival Adoration: While not directly connect to Duchesne, this non-profit is dedicated to building and strengthening the Culture of Pentecost within the Church. They are hosting some upcoming praise and worship sessions. All are welcome: St. Cecilia on 8/5 at 7:00pm; St. Margaret Mary on 9/23 at 7:00pm; St. Vincent De Paul on 10/16 at 7:00pm.   • Interested in becoming an HMHC? The training is again all online this year, beginning in Fall. You can register here.

Freshman parents are invited to join us for a cup of coffee and a sweet treat as your daughter experiences her first day of high school. Feel the support and love of this exciting moment in your daughters’ life!

  • When you arrive your daughter will be guided by a member of the student council to start her day. 
  • This short and sweet event is a wonderful way to meet other freshman parents!

This event is hosted by the Congé chair couples, Kara and Tom Kelley (parents of Kate A24) and Torey and John Reed (parents of Emily and Kate A'24).  They are delighted to welcome you to Duchesne!


What is Congé?
Congé is French for "holiday or playday" and has two meanings at Duchesne: the first being a surprise day with games and fun that the girls will experience once within the school year. We also use the word for our annual fundraiser and this year, Congé 2023 is themed Fairmont Forever. We hope you will join us by volunteering and attending this event on January 28, 2023!

Activities

The New Orleans Service Trip is Back!  


Ten students will join four adults (Mrs. Kreis, Mrs. Doyle, Mrs. Hiddleston, and Mr. Krakowski) to work with SBP (St. Bernard Project, a disaster relief organization) doing construction and repair for homeowners still displaced by recent hurricanes and flooding in Louisiana.

There will be an informational meeting on 4 August at 1PM in the KMR.  Yes that’s before school starts but we need to get details locked down very soon after school starts. 

Here is a quick rundown: 

  • Dates: October 22-27 (Because this is the week of parent/teacher conferences, students will miss one single block day and two double blocks, one odd and one even.)
  • Cost: approximately $1,500 each, plus your personal spending money. Covers airfare, lodging (bunk-style, volunteer housing), food (except for one dinner out), educational programming, and car rentals etc. This will be divided into two payments due in September and October.
  • Students (and adults) going on the trip MUST be fully vaccinated against covid. Additionally, a negative covid test may be required before departure.

If you are interested in this trip, there a few things to consider:

  • A23 will have priority. 
  • This is the same time as Mrs. McConnell’s Koinonia Farm trip.  In the fall, if you are applying for both, you will have to rank the two trips. Of course, you may also apply for only one trip of your choice.

We plan to field a full JV and a full Varsity team with a couple swing players that will suit up for both teams.

Team selections will be made during the final hour of Tryouts on the 11th.

Athletics Registration and Consent Form Requirements Reminder

The following items are required for participation in athletics and need to be completed prior to tryouts

  • A physical evaluation completed after May 1, 2022.
    • We highly recommend that you have the physician that is completing the evaluation use the Pre-participation Physical Evaluation Form provided on Duchesne’s website. Here is the link to this formPlease note that physicals for fall athletes are due on August 8th. Athletes will not be able to participate in their sport until they have completed and turned in a physical evaluation. These can be turned in by either emailing them to the Athletic Director at [email protected] or by dropping off or mailing a paper copy.
 
  • The athlete-parent contract
    • This form must be completed and submitted online by following this link and selecting “Athlete-Parent Contract.” You can submit this form electronically by downloading, saving to desktop, and hitting the submit button on the bottom of page 2. This will also need to be completed prior to participation in fall athletics on August 8th.

 

  • Athletes that have any health conditions (i.e. diabetes, allergies, asthma, seizures, migraines), please make sure you have the appropriate health forms completed and returned to the school nurse, Olivia Kelly. Click here for more information.

The Booster Club Needs You!

The Booster Club is committed to supporting all of our athletes who participate in the 10 NSAA sports and six athletic clubs at Duchesne. We raise funds and invest in the students, programs, and facilities. Duchesne's Athletic Department relies on the support of the Booster Club to financially support team and student bus transportation, equipment, technology, training camps, and weight room equipment – all of which are essential for our athletes. During the 2021-2022 school year, the Booster Club funded over $40,000 toward these investments. This support allows Duchesne to create successful programs and to continue the tradition of not charging participation fees for athletics.
