Duchesne Announces Update to 4.0 Grading Scale

The world of college admissions continues to change quickly, and we have noticed new policies over the last few years. For example, many colleges have adopted test-optional admission, which places more emphasis on student grades in the admissions process.  Duchesne is committed to ensuring that every student is presented to colleges and scholarship agencies in her best possible light. Toward that end, we will be updating all transcripts starting with the class of 2023 to a 4.0 scale.

In the past few years, our college counselor, Mrs. Swanson, has made many phone calls to admissions offices and scholarship agencies to ensure that the translation of our 100-point scale is calculated correctly.  Some colleges are converting the GPA reported on our transcript using the college’s own scale.  This has resulted in slight variations in GPA depending on each student’s course work and grades and is not always consistent with Duchesne’s conversion scale currently offered on the transcript.

We now need to make a global change. The new 4.0 scale will recognize the rigor of AP and Honors classes with a .5 addition for honors and 1.0 addition for AP classes to the 4.0 scale in lieu of the added points currently in place.  It is important to note that colleges review a student’s transcript in the context of her high school’s academic program. This change in our grading scale will be fully explained on our school profile page which will be edited in the fall.  We have much greater confidence that the new GPA will be unchallenged and will thus benefit our students.

Every junior will be given her newly translated GPA this month and updated transcripts will be available in August to everyone. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions.
