Celebrating Rose Philippine Duchesne

Her Feast Day is November 18th!

Rose Philippine Duchesne was born in Grenoble, France in 1769 and felt called to a religious life at an early age. Overcoming her father’s objections, she entered the Visitation convent at age 18. However, the French Revolution closed or suppressed all religious houses which delayed her plans. In 1804, she met Madeleine Sophie Barat and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart. The two became immediate and lifelong friends.

Philippine longed to serve as a missionary in the New World, but it would be 13 years before she would be able to board the Rebecca in 1818 with four other RSCJ. Eventually, she was assigned to set up the first Sacred Heart school outside of Europe in a small log cabin in St. Charles, Missouri. At first, she educated the children of European settlers and it wasn’t until 1841 that she was able to establish a school for Potawatomi girls in Sugar Creek, Kansas. By this time, she was 72 years old, spending most of her time in prayer. This is why the Potawatomi named her Quakahkanumad: “Woman Who Prays Always.”

On November 17, we will welcome Janet Pearl, member of the Potawatomi Citizen Tribe whose great grandmother learned at the feet of Philippine Duchesne. Mrs. Pearl will share the story of the Trail of Death, the forced march of her family from North Bend, Indiana, to Sugar Creek, Kansas, and the deep devotion to St. Philippine that was kept alive in her family.

Announcing: The Dash Follies

From Mr. Becker
  • Do you sing?
  • Do you have a gift for drama or comedy?
  • Do you dance ballet, modern, jazz, or tap?
  • Are you an instrumentalist? Do you play in a band?

Auditions for Duchesne Academy’s DASH FOLLIES will be held the second week in January!

What are THE DASH FOLLIES you ask? That’s easy. THE DASH FOLLIES are a place where you can share an amazing aptitude, a credible capability, a fabulous flair, a nifty knack, or a glorified gift!

Come together with other artists to put together this show. Once the acts are chosen, we will create a schedule and participants will be asked to attend rehearsals on a regular basis. We will need a Master(s) of Ceremonies and a small crew.

Gifts are meant to be shared. Start thinking now about how you can share yours!

Goal One Spotlight

Molly Shirazi, Art Faculty

Because of my art background, I am always observing what I can take photos of, so I believe that is one gift I share with my community. I’ve always been an observant individual who notices small and often overlooked things in our day-to-day lives. Whether in a photo or just pointing out the seemingly unobserved in the moment, this is just one way I bring growth to my faith community. When I notice something and point it out to others, this causes those around me to also stop and take in the wonders around us. I like to think of the phrase, ‘stop and smell the roses’ where in our busy lives we sometimes take things for granted, or just don’t acknowledge them at all. So maybe this week, take a moment to be observant, and really look for the good in the world and the wonderful gifts we’ve been given in every moment.

Open House- Thank you!

Our sincerest thanks to everyone who volunteered to help us host an amazing Open House on Sunday. We welcomed girls and their families from across the Omaha area to discover Duchesne and the wonderful community here. We received many compliments about how our students presented themselves and the school.

There is more to come! If you know of a middle school student who would make a great Duchesne girl, please make sure she knows about our series of fun events! Click the button below to view the current lineup!

Duchesne & Operation Others

Operation Others is a student-led effort provides food assistance to families at Christmas and educates others about food insecurity in our community to encourage a preferential option for the poor.  Operation Others began at Creighton Prep in 1967.  Its work has now expanded to include the help of eight Catholic high school students from Creighton Prep, Marian, Duchesne, Mercy, Skutt, Gross, Roncalli, and Mount Michael who plan and help deliver food baskets to the needy at Christmas.  Students and families are invited to participate in this ministry.
