If you are a Duchesne sports fan you have likely seen some amazing blocks and hits by Senior Liz Layson. Liz has been on the volleyball team since her freshmen year and will continue to play next year at Queen’s College in North Carolina. What you might not know is that Liz is not the only Volleyball talent in her family! Her father, DJ Layson, is a well-known and respected club volleyball coach both locally and nationally. When our freshmen coach asked for some support as she began to build a team, we looked no further than the Layson family. DJ Layson stepped up to the challenge.
What began as a couple of position-specific clinics became a full-time gig with Coach Layson attending nearly all practices and freshmen games. The players and coaches love the intensity, knowledge and passion that Coach Layson brings to practice.
We are so grateful for Coach Layson’s dedication to Duchesne Volleyball and for sharing his energy and insight with our coaches and players. Thank you coach!

PSAT/NMSQT Registration
PSAT/NMSQT Test Registration (Juniors)
The PreACT 8/9, the PreACT, and the ACT is the annual required tests administered to 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. This family of tests better prepares our students to take the ACT, provides a more accurate snapshot of student progress, and delivers more useful data for curriculum development. As a result, Juniors are no longer required to take the PSAT/NMSQT at Duchesne.
The PSAT/NMSQT is not part of any college admissions process. The primary purpose of the PSAT/NMSQT is to qualify students for the National Merit Scholar program and the potential for recognition and scholarship opportunities through this highly selective competition. While this test is no longer required of Juniors at Duchesne, we recognize that some Juniors may wish to participate in the National Merit Scholar competition. Duchesne will offer the PSAT/NMSQT on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 10am. This is the Friday of Parent/Teachers Conferences and students are otherwise not required to be at school. If your daughter is a junior and would like to take the PSAT/NMSQT at Duchesne on that date, please contact Mr. Eric Krakowski at ekrakowski@duchesneacademy.org. The final day to register for the PSAT/NMSQT is September 6. The deadline to request accommodations for qualifying students is August 23.
Fall Play Announcement
Duchesne Academy’s fall production will be “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, a script written by local playwrights Ben Beck and Jill Anderson, and based on the Washington Irving’s iconic story. Performances will be October 24th-27th.
Auditions will be Tuesday, August 27th and Wednesday, August 28th from 3:40 PM - 5:00 PM.
Those auditioning will be asked to read from the script and take part in a variety of fun, impromptu acting exercises with other actors. You don’t need to memorize anything to audition.
Students who wish to work on the production crew can apply for a position next week. Please see Mr. Becker for more information.

Junior and Senior Parking
If you are the parent of a junior or senior who is interested in a reserved parking space for the upcoming school year you must complete the appropriate section on the online registration form. Only students whose forms are submitted by the deadline will be considered for parking. All seniors are guaranteed a spot and seniors who did not have a spot as juniors will be given priority for spots closer to the Performing Arts Center entrance. Because there are not enough spots for all students, Juniors requesting a spot will be entered into a lottery and randomly chosen for any spots not already assigned to seniors. It is highly unlikely that all students requesting a spot will receive one. Permits cost $20 and payment information will be sent after all spots have been assigned. If you have questions about parking, please contact Eric Krakowski at ekrakowski@duchesneacademy.org.

Summer Reading Guide
We hope that all of the students are enjoying the assigned summer reading. There are 2 kinds of summer reading:
- Your English class assignment. These books should be read closely and annotated. Students will be assessed over the books in the first weeks of school.
- The All-school read, The Lemon Tree. This book will not be assessed. It should be read to deepen understanding of the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict and to appreciate the courage of the two main character’s dialogue amid this conflict. No dates, names, or timeline need to be memorized. Mrs. Reinhart, World Cultures teacher and Social Studies Department Chair, created a guide to help those who have not yet taken World Cultures or who need a refresher about the conflict. The lecture/slides are HERE

Head of School Blog Post
- Head of School Blog
It's time to let go of the need for validation from others and recognize that you have inherent worth just as you are. BE-YOU-TIFUL!
You give glory to God by being you. Despite the messages of social media and consumerism, our faith tells us that we are loved and enough just the way we are. Thomas Merton, a mystic and theologian, said, “A tree gives glory to God by being a tree”, and calls our identity in God, “enoughness.”
In a Sacred Heart school, we are called to educate to a personal and active faith in God by nurturing the spiritual lives of our members through the exploration of one’s relationship to God, to self, to others and to creation. (Goal 1, criteria 7).
I am constantly amazed at the unique gifts and talents of each of our students. At Duchesne, individuality is not only embraced but it is celebrated. St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, founder of the Society of the Sacred Heart, created an environment in her first schools that celebrated the unique gifts of all students. We proudly carry on that legacy today.
In the eyes of God, you are good enough. You possess qualities that make you special and valuable. Comparing yourself to others only diminishes your self-worth and prevents you from fully appreciating your own abilities—or worse, makes you feel superior. It's time to let go of the need for validation from others and recognize that you have inherent worth just as you are. BE-YOU-TIFUL!
Imagine a forest where every tree looks the same, each one mirroring the other instead of loving its own unique beauty. The forest would lose its majesty, and the ecosystem that thrives on the diversity of the trees would struggle to survive. That's why it's so important for each of us to embrace our individuality, glorifying God by being the unique 'tree' God created us to be.

Pay for Lunch
Sophie's Kitchen utilizes GoFan to sell individual lunches (a same day purchase) and lunch passes for an entire quarter.
Student lunch prices for the 2024-25 school year are:
$6.00 per lunch with a quarterly pass
$7.00 per lunch if purchased day of
Quarter 2 Lunch Passes will be available soon
To purchase a pass:
1. Download the GoFan App
2. Search for Duchesne Academy or click here
3. Review and buy your pass
4. Your lunch "ticket" will pop up on the app. Note: Screenshots will not be accepted. Your student must have her own GoFan account on her phone or iPad.
How does lunch work?
Students will use their phone or iPad to present their lunch pass. It will work one time in a 24 hour period, so siblings will each need their own lunch pass.
Students who have a lunch pass for the quarter will NOT need to complete a lunch survey to order lunch. They will automatically be counted for a lunch each day.
First quarter lunch passes are good for 41 lunches and cost 240.00. Families wishing to use the lunch pass will need to buy a lunch pass at the beginning of each quarter.
Cash will be accepted for single lunch purchases as students go through the lunch line. We will no longer accept debit or credit cards for single lunch purchases. Mrs. Becker will still have the IOU list for those little emergencies such as phones left at home, cash left at home or when a student is lured to the cafeteria by the smells and didn’t plan to eat that day.

A message from Dr. Hickman
Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take offence and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in the truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes.
(1 Corinthians 13: 4-7)
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to a new year of making known the love of Christ! I am sure that like me, you are desperately hanging on to the last days of summer and the relative quiet and relaxation before the beginning of the school year. At the same time, our thoughts are naturally turning to the new year with some excitement and hope.
I would like to extend a special welcome to our incoming freshmen and transfer students. We very much hope that you will come to think of Duchesne as your home and your classmates as an extended family. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Our faculty and staff will also enjoy some additions:
· Mrs. Elizabeth Prauner will teach Biology
· Mr. Matthew Friesner joins the theology and campus ministry team
· Mr. Hugh Morton, already known to many as the e-sports coach, will join the I.T. faculty as Robotics teacher/coach and math student teacher.
· Other additions to the staff include Mrs. Lea Thomas as Attendance Secretary, Mr. Frank Bernal in maintenance, Ms. Maggie Vazquez in admissions, and Mrs. Julie Swartz in event planning.
Together, our community will begin the year focused on some important challenges. Our nation will face a difficult election this fall. How can we, as a Sacred Heart community, express our beliefs and opinions with each other in ways that build community rather than damage it? Our communication standards will be updated and reviewed throughout the year. We will share this work with our families and encourage discussion and reinforcement; great things happen when we can find common ground and shared values.
A second goal for the year is that we will improve attendance. Fundamental shifts in society occurred during the pandemic as the world embraced remote work. In schools, however, one of the most important lessons of the pandemic is the importance of in-person learning and community for our teens. The disruptions of the pandemic years have created lost learning and lost opportunities for social formation that continue to affect schools across the nation. At Duchesne, we have seen dramatic increases in absenteeism that continue to affect student learning. In 2018-19, 0 students had more than 15 absences for the school year. In 2023-24, that increased to 21 students. This is a trend that needs to reverse. We will be reporting out to our parents each quarter our progress toward the goal of improved attendance.
Your teachers and I are looking forward to another year of learning and growing together in the Duchesne family. We look forward to a wonderful year together.
Dr. Laura McKee Hickman, Ed. D. A'85
Principal
Volunteer for lunch
Duchesne has one lunch period a day and more than 100 students, faculty and staff come through the line. In order to keep things moving and give our community time to enjoy the fabulous meal, we rely on parent volunteers to come serve lunch.

Use the sign up genius link and pick your time to come help!
Picture Day- August 20th
Lifetouch will be on campus for school photos on Tuesday, August 20. They will set up in the PAC and begin taking photos at 8:15 for those who arrive early and want to get their photo done before school. Complete uniform is required for all students. Seniors will have their photo taken for ID purposes only.
Your daughter will receive an order form from her advisor on the first day of school. Forms will be available the day of photos as well.
Heidi Reinhart participates in Sacred Heart Network workshop

Head of School Blog: Unleashing Girl Power
Unleashing Girl Power
- Head of School Blog
Welcome to Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart! An all-girls, Catholic, independent school, where the power of sisterhood and faith intertwine to create a vibrant and empowering learning environment.
The Joyful Journey of Attending a Sacred Heart All-Girls School
As a Duchesne Academy alumna, I personally experienced the countless benefits of attending high school with my Sacred Heart sisters. The smart, confident, fun girls with whom I created lifelong connections are now women who have gone on to lead as executives, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and amazing moms.
In my current role as Head of School, I see from a different perspective how the role an all-girls environment fosters friendships, develops each girl’s courage and confidence, and helps her cultivate a personal and active faith in God.
What is the Sacred Heart school magic that, in four short years, transforms a likely shy and tentative young girl into a confident young woman?
The journey of self-discovery and empowerment begins as soon as the girls step foot into Duchesne. The girls are encouraged to explore their interests, express their opinions, and, without limitation, pursue their dreams. The absence of boys in the classroom creates a safe and inclusive space where the girls can voice their thoughts and ideas—they are empowered to question and equipped to lead in an atmosphere filled with love and wise freedom.
“Sisterhood” in a Sacred Heart school is more than just a word – it's a way of life.
Girls grow, learn together and create lasting bonds that extend far beyond the classroom. Whether it's through shared laughter, supportive study groups, traveling for music competitions, or spirited sports tournaments, the camaraderie forms a sisterhood that uplifts and empowers each girl.
As a Catholic, girls’ school, the girls are given space to talk about God and their faith in theology classes and/or student lounges.
Duchesne provides a nurturing environment where the girls can explore their spirituality, develop a strong moral compass, and deepen their understanding of Catholic teachings. Through prayer services, retreats, and community outreach programs, the girls are encouraged to embrace kindness, compassion, and empathy towards others and throughout their community.
Courage and Confidence are Duchesne superpowers!
Within an all-girls environment, Duchesne students are encouraged to speak up, take risks, and pursue their passions with unwavering self-assurance. Through engaging classroom discussions, leadership opportunities, and extracurricular activities, an all-girls school fosters an environment wherein young women can discover their voices and develop the confidence to make a difference in the world. In every aspect of the school, the girls witness their Sacred Heart sisters taking risks, possibly failing, and then stepping up again. From the classroom to student counsel, to the Basketball court, to the Stage, to Mock Trial, to the STEAM Lab, the Soccer Fields and the Music and Art rooms—Duchesne has a place where each girl can grow in courage and confidence.
Academic excellence is at the heart of an all-girls’ education.
With a focus on individualized attention, girls’ schools provide a supportive environment in which girls will thrive academically. The International Coalition of Girls emphasizes that girls in single-sex schools tend to have higher confidence in their abilities, greater interest in traditionally male-dominated subjects, and higher aspirations for their future careers. So, whether it's mastering advanced calculus or exploring the depths of literature, girls will more freely pursue their academic passions
Further, girls in single-sex schools, are encouraged to be leaders, not just followers.
With countless opportunities such as student council, clubs, and community service initiatives, Duchesne empowers girls to become the architects of their own success. By fostering leadership skills, Duchesne equips young women with the tools they need to become future influential and compassionate leaders within their own communities.
Attending Duchesne Academy in an all-girls’ environment is an extraordinary journey filled with sisterhood, confidence, empowerment, academic excellence, and faith. Each girl is celebrated for her unique gifts and talents, in an environment where she will flourish academically and personally. Whether you're a young girl dreaming of a supportive and joyful learning experience or a parent seeking an empowering educational environment, consider the remarkable benefits of a Sacred Heart, all-girls, Catholic, and independent school. Embrace the spirit and let the power of sisterhood shape your future.
Cor Unum et Anima Una in Corde Jesu,
Meg Huerter Brudney A'83

(Omaha, Neb.)- Duchesne Academy’s Mock Trial team is celebrating after earning 12th place at the National High School Mock Trial Championship.
The team traveled to Wilmington, Del. May 3 and 4 to compete against hundreds of other high school students across the country. Duchesne’s team won the Nebraska State Championship earlier this year, which granted them a ticket to the national competition. Members of the team include: Team captain Lilly Risch Bakhit, Claire Jeffries, Susie Morgan-Girgis, Libby Saal, Ann Mammen, Emma Carlson, Camila Castro. Coaches include: Judge Stefanie Martinez, Jerry Laughlin, Rick Jeffries, Mark Laughlin.
“Our Mock Trial team is representative of Duchesne’s academic rigor,” Duchesne Head of School, Meg Brudney, said. “This team put in countless hours of practice to be one of the best in the nation. They show what it means to work hard toward a goal.”
Duchesne has a history of a strong showing at the National Mock Trial. In 2015 they took home the National Championship, and placed 2nd in 2016. This is the first time Duchesne has competed as reigning state champion since 2020.

4 tips to help your daughter navigate the end of the semester
In the final weeks of this school year, we are completing the planned curriculum and preparing for finals. Many of our students will also be taking AP exams from May 6 to 17. This is a stressful and demanding time of year for our students. Please help support your daughter as she juggles many responsibilities by:
- Get 8 or more hours of sleep per night
- Find time to complete daily work and start studying for finals
- Encourage brain breaks to relieve tension and improve learning
- Build confidence with encouraging messages!
Many of our teens develop bad habits during stressful times; help point them in the right direction. One habit of particular concern is staying up late to study. There are reems of data to show that this is counterproductive to successful test-taking. Help your daughter do her best by having her put her iPad, phone, and all study materials in a room other than her bedroom and encouraging a strict time for light’s out.

Duchesne waste audit improves 11%
(Omaha, Neb.)- Duchesne Academy’s efforts in sustainability show significant improvement after the latest campus-wide waste audit.
The audit measured how much waste was made between April 18-25th and the diversion rate of that waste. The diversion rate is the percentage of total waste that is diverted from the landfill. The audit found Duchesne diverted 82.4% of waste from the landfill. This is an improvement from November’s audit, which had a diversion rate of 71.5%.
“This improvement can only happen because the Duchesne community has committed themselves to disposing things responsibly and properly,” Assistant Principal and Sustainability Coordinator Eric Krakowski said.
The goal is to achieve “Zero Waste” status, which is a 90% diversion rate. Duchesne achieved this in November 2022. The next waste audit will be conducted in fall of 2024.
Duchesne has been awarded several accolades for its efforts in sustainability through the years including ongoing EPA Energy Star Certification, a “Green Star Award” from the Ignatian Solidarity Network in 2017, the 2019 G7 Eco-Citizen Contest from the French Embassy in the US, and was named a US Department of Education Green Ribbon School in 2020.
Some of the school’s efforts in sustainability include campus-wide participation in recycling and composting, installation of solar panels, high-efficiency heat pumps, and LED lighting. Duchesne was the first school in Omaha to produce renewable energy on campus. Each class also has a sustainability requirement in the curriculum.
